Permaculture Techniques - Useful Animals in a Permaculture System
Goats
Harvest: Suitable yarding and dairy required for milking. If slaughtering for meat then same requirements as for pigs.
Treatment: Milk will need to be refrigerated, keeping all utensils scrupulously clean. Yoghurt, and cheeses may be produced, requiring special skills. The dairy would need to be designed with suitable processing areas. Meat can be dried in screened and shaded air cupboards, and part salted or smoked or kept refrigerated or frozen.
Use: Milk, yoghurt and cheese for human consumption. Meat for human, dogs and cats. Skins for clothing, shoes etc. Vegetation control (fire and pest plants). Manure.
