Permaculture Diary: 11th January 2008 Copyright © Beverley Paine We find it impossible to go shopping now without feeling the need to escape the shopping malls and busy streets as quickly as possible. Whereas once upon a time we'd collate a list half a page long of things we wanted to buy and places we needed to visit when trekking all the way up to the city and metropolitan area, now we do our best to shop locally, or get large items delivered. It's not the cost of petrol (or diesel for the Toyota Hilux); it's the hustle and bustle and our aversion to the visual pollution along the route. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate signage, but honestly, there's just too much of it lining our arterial roads. I remember deploring the kilometres of billboards that greeted us on the open road when travelling to holiday destinations with my family during my childhood. To me it was, and still is, simply another form of litter. Our youngest needed new clothes and that necessitated a trip to the 'burbs'. I needed some green tea capsules, which I keep forgetting to take each morning. I can't drink the tea straight as it causes indigestion and naseau unfortunately. Plus, I'd need a bucketful of tea to get the dose I need! Clothes and certain herbal supplements are two things we can't buy locally. There's a surf shop in town, but the shirts all have logos or slogans splashed across them: not exactly suitable attire for work. We picked up an Experience Western Australia book (at half price because we're RAA members) and spent the afternoon checking out accommodation options in Perth. We need to book something soon. Our trip is now only five weeks away! It took all afternoon to sift through the options and to work out what type of accommodation we really want. Do we choose something cheap and spend most of our time sightseeing, or do we opt for something a little more luxurious and spend half the time relaxing in a spa, by a pool, or working out in a gym, watching movies on a decent sized television? Do we book a room with a kitchenette or decide to eat out each night instead? Do we find somewhere close to public transport or do we hire a car? CHOICES! Who needs them!! At bed time we were leaning heavily toward using public transport, finding something comfortable close to the city, and not hiring a car...
