Permaculture Diary: 2nd January 2008

Our son came home from a few days celebrating the arrival of the New Year in Adelaide with friends with the unhappy and frustrating news that he had to leave his car behind due to engine problems, yet again. This morning the guys focussed on getting a wreck ready to take to the recyclers - this makes taking the car trailer to Adelaide to pick up his car more environmentally sound as well as economic. The plan was to do some shopping along the way, picking up the green tea extract supplements I need, and replacing Robin's almost see through swimmers. I'm not sure I want to go to the beach with him wearing his old ones again!

I began the day formatting the Kathi's booklets on educational games. I'd like to finish this and the proof-reading by the end of the week so that we can get them printed early next week. It's a big ask and I think I will be working in the evenings, but I'm determined.

Listening to New Dimensions on Radio National today this guy said that in order to achieve our goals we need to make a commitment: it's not about simply preparing the path by creating the right environment, which is where I get stuck all the time. Motivation requires commitment. I enjoyed the program which talked about deep medicine and deep healing.

As I write this I am remembering to drink water. I am convinced that my body needs more water than I give it each day, so I have made a promise to myself to drink at least 1.5litres of unpolluted water each day. This is in addition to any other drinks I may have, like coffee, cocoa, shandy (beer and soda water), glass of red wine with dinner, etc. I'm not sure if this is going to be enough, but I'm sure as my body gets used to finally being hydrated it will send me a clear signal if it needs more.

Today has been one of the windiest days I've known here in Yankalilla. Although the forecast continued to say 'strong winds' this is definitely gale force. The house has been continually buffetted by south-south-easterly gusts most of the day. With luck it will ease soon and we won't have a windy - and noisy - night. The new wind turbine seems to be holding its own, furling frequenly to protect itself.

We didn't process any fruit today. Some of the trays of drying fruit blew off the table but because they landed on fresh gravel did not get soiled. We're amazed at how quickly the fruit is drying. The apples take only a day or two. The bananas we sliced and dipped in lemon juice are looking good.

I did not get my exercises done today, nor did I go for a walk.

Here is a recipe my daughter asked me to give her for one of our family's favourite salad dishes:

Soy Sauce Dressing

3/4 cup sunflower oil, 4 tbsp soy sauce, 2 tbsp lemon juice, 1 clove garlic crushed, salt and pepper to taste

Put all the ingredients in a screw top jar, adding salt and pepper to taste, and shake well to blend. Add tbsp crushed ginger, or 1 seeded and finely chopped green chilli, if you like.

Brown Rice Salad
1 cup brown rice; salt; 6 spring onions; 1 red capsicum cored, seeded and diced; 1/3 cup currants; 60g roasted cashew nuts; 2 tbsp roasted sunflower seeds; 6 tbsp Soy Sauce dressing; 3 tbsp chopped parsley

Cook the rice in salted water for 30 or so minutes until tender. Chope the spring onion finely. Transfer rice to a bowl while still warm and add the spring onions and remaining ingredients. Toss thoroughly and transfer to a serving dish. You can add sweetcorn and diced green capsicum if you like.
