Permaculture Diary: 10th January 2008 Copyright © Beverley Paine Anorther scorcher of a day with the temperature hitting above 40 degrees Celcius! We spent a wonderful hour at Carrickalinga Beach in the middle of the day. The guys mucked about in the water, doing somersaults and generally trying to drown each other in the almost tepid water. I floated and relaxed mostly doing circles around Robin who simply enjoyed the water. Going to the beach in the middle of the day in summer is foolhardy, but it's a great way to cool off. We slipped, slopped and slapped suncream on exposed parts of our body, wore UV protectant swimming gear, and hats (even in the water - not only do they keep the sun off our faces, they help to keep us cool.) I once spent a lovely hour in the water under an umbrella. It's amazing how much cooler it is under that much shade on the water! Doesn't do the brolly much good: mine rusted out before the end of summer. We went back to the beach at sunset for a picnic tea on the grass, and then wallowed in the shallows until the sun had almost set. Feeling the need for exercise (finally!) I swam to the jetty and back, a distance of around 300 metres. With cooler weather forecast for the next week I'm hoping to get back into our regular morning walk along the beach. The sunset was another Fleurieu Peninsula beauty with gilt edged clouds on the horizon helping to bathe the sky in a golden glow. We did a few batches of fruit leather and another batch of tomato pulp, which we hope to turn into tomato flakes for thickening sauces and gravies. The dried cherries don't have much flavour: they are like little sugar bombs and remind me of chewy, boiled sweets. On of our sons began to tackle the list of tasks on our list of bushfire prevention strategies. Pruning the grape and passionfruit vines over the pergola. He concentrated on pulling out and cutting back vines that are within 500mm of the house wall. A good start. We hope to get a lot more done in the next few days, before the weather heats up again.
